Lucy Acton, the horse
Coming soon to a racetrack near you: Lucy Acton, the horse. The longtime editor of Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred before her death last year was honored by the Sleeter family of New Jersey with a homebred filly they christened “Lucy Acton.”
The yearling is by Northview PA sire Medallist out of the Private Terms mare Bring Me Flowers, and is a half-sister to stakes winner Whoop’s Ah Daisy, an earner of $265,010.
Carolyn Sleeter, who owns Sleeter Farm in Clementon, N.J., with her husband, Gerry, said that during a conversation she had with Lucy shortly before her death, she told her she wanted to name a horse after her.
“She said, ‘that’s so nice of you, thank you,’ ” recalled Sleeter. “During our conversation, she never mentioned how seriously ill she was.”
Per regulations of The Jockey Club, the Sleeters needed permission from Acton’s family, which they received.
Lucy Acton, the filly, is a dark bay or brown foaled April 14, 2011, and will most likely be broken at the Pons family’s Merryland Farm in Maryland.
