Abbott and Costello they’re not, but Roy Lerman and Charlie McGinnes put on a pretty good reenactment outside the sales pavilion at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic’s Eastern Fall Yearling Sale in Timonium, Md., on Oct. 1. Lerman spent $90,000 to buy a Ghostzapper colt from McGinnes. Both horsemen were happy, in a grumpy sort of way; and Fasig-Tipton had to turn off the lights at some point, or else the conversation might still be going.

Roy: “I bought your horse.”
Charlie: “You did? I thought somebody else did. You bought the Ghostzapper? Oh good. You got a great buy.”
Roy: “You made a lot of money.”
Charlie: “We did OK, we bought the mare for 57 (thousand) in foal I think. If you can get out on the first foal, that’s good. But that doesn’t happen very often. When we bought her, Ghostzapper was very cold. Now he’s hot.”
Roy: “Great, it cost me $50,000 because some horse won a race.”
Charlie: “You still got a good horse.”
Roy: “I did?”
Charlie: “Just look at him.”
Roy: “I did that already.”
Charlie: “Exactly.”
