Maryland-bred Bold Affair, repeat winner last month of the Primonetta Stakes at Pimlico, has been retired, according to her owner Charles Reed. Reed owns and co-bred the Two Punch mare in partnership with Mike Zanella.

The five-year-old Bold Affair is out of Hunka Hunka Lori Z (Colonial Affair), purchased by Reed as a yearling at the September sale in Timonium in 1999 for $7,000. Reed also owned a share of Two Punch, who died in 2011.

Bold Affair earned $719,540 in 19 starts, with a record of 12-2-3.  She retires with nine stakes victories, including the 2012 Maryland Million Distaff at Laurel Park. She was trained by Howard Wolfendale. 

She won five of her last six starts and was on a three-race winning streak when Reed decided to retire her. 

“We had originally intended to run her in the Skipat Stakes and back in October in the Maryland Million and then retire her,” Reed said. “But she’s raced 19 times, and she’s been great to us, and it was time. There wasn’t a whole lot more we could prove with her.” 

Reed and Zanella also bred a 2006 full sister to Bold Affair, Lori Z’s Punch, who earned $209,635 in 46 lifetime starts and is in foal to Majestic Warrior. Reed bred the 1993 three-year-old Maryland champion, Chip’s Dancer.

Bold Affair will be bred to Ghostzapper and return to Maryland to foal. “The foal will absolutely be a Maryland-bred,” said Reed. “We breed to race, not to sell, and we want to run in Maryland.”
