Derry Meeting Farm in Chester County, Pa., sold in three parcels, none expected to continue breeding Thoroughbreds.
Purchased by Marshall Jenney in 1964 and run by his widow, Bettina, after his death in 2000, Derry Meeting bred leading sire Danzig and was the birthplace of leading sire Storm Cat. Among other greats were three-time English and Irish champion Mrs. Penny, French and English champion Selkirk, Breeders’ Cup Turf-G1 winner Tikkanen, stakes winner and Grade 1 producer Mrs. Jenney, Irish classic winner Lucarno and multiple Grade/Group 1 winner Mrs. Lindsay (a great-granddaughter of Mrs. Jenney).
Said Bettina Jenney about the decision: “Marshall made his dream come true when he bought the farm in 1964, and I just tried to carry on that dream and it was wonderful doing it. I’m getting older and it’s time to retire.”
- “Ladies in Waiting” offered a window into the local breeding industry. During the season that brings “optimism, hope, promise of new foals and future racehorses,” the magazine caught up with a sampling of notable mares, including Shared Account, Layounne, Julie B and Jazzy Idea. “Broodmares. They’re big, small, old, young, barren, maiden, grouchy, happy, bay, chestnut, gray and they’re here. Ready,” wrote Joe Clancy.
- Dr. Kathy Anderson was installed as the president-elect for the American Association of Equine Practitioners for 2015. A former veterinarian for the U.S. Equestrian Team, Anderson worked at several Mid-Atlantic tracks, including Philadelphia Park, Atlantic City and Garden State Park, before moving to Maryland’s Fair Hill Training Center in 1993.
- Noble Moon made it six Edward P. Evans-breds in a row to win a graded stakes at 3 in the Grade 2 Jerome at Aqueduct. The son of Malibu Moon, representing four generations born at Evans’ Spring Hill Farm in Casanova, Va., was a member of the breeder’s final crop, and joined Quality Road, A Little Warm, Dominus, Blueskiesnrainbows and Code West to accomplish the feat.
- With $401,070 in earnings, Noble Moon became the richest of 44 weanlings sold at the Evans dispersal at Keeneland in 2011.
