 Looking Back

This month in mid-atlantic thoroughbred history! For Looking Back archives click here.

Bayern, who caught the eye of Virginia resident Kaleem Shah, his 16-year-old son Arman, and advisors Bob Baffert and Donato Lani at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-year-old sale at Timonium, was a wise purchase at $320,000. A year later, he won Monmouth Park’s $1 million Haskell Invitational by 71⁄4 lengths. His sire, former Kentucky stallion Offlee Wild, wrapped up his second season at Pin Oak Lane Farm in Pennsylvania.

In recording his third win in the Grade 3, $200,000 Parx Dash, King Leatherbury’s Ben’s Cat surpassed $2 million in earnings. The $120,000 brought the 8-year-old Maryland-bred’s total to $2,105,990. On the same day (July 12), Ed Stanco’s Pennsylvania-bred homebred Princess of Sylmar passed the $2 million mark with a second in the $750,000 Delaware Handicap-G1, in which she was upset by Belle Gallantey.

Six months after the untimely passing of her father, future Hall of Fame trainer Tom Voss, trainer Elizabeth Voss had her first Grade 1 win at Saratoga with Makari (GB) in the $100,000 A.P. Smithwick Memorial steeplechase. The winner was piloted by Irish jump jockey Jack Doyle, in only his second American ride.

Maryland-bred Gallorette was honored with a plaque on the Hoofprints Walk of Fame at Saratoga Race Course, dedicated to recognize stars of the turf which garnered special success at the New York track. Among Gallorette’s career highlights was a victory in the 1948 Whitney Handicap. Created in 2013 to mark the 150th year of racing at Saratoga Race Course, the project’s supporters included Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson. Gallorette was one of 40 horses honored.
