Northview Stallion Station announced the retirement of Not For Love. The 25-year-old son of Mr. Prospector made his entire career at the Chesapeake City, Md., farm and led the region's sire ranks for years. For 13 of the previous 14 years his progeny earned in excess of $3 million and he had at least one stakes winner in each of his 15 crops to race (through 2014), with 79 total at the time of his retirement.
The documentary Racing The Times premiered at the Senator Theatre in Baltimore. The film, which travels back in time to the 1700s and the Annapolis Subscription Plate, provided a look at Maryland's storied Thoroughbred industry. "I know we have the watermen, but in the state of Maryland I can't think of a tradition that's as powerful and has survived the ebbs and flows of history the way the horse industry is," said producer/director Drew Perkins.
Wiseman's Ferry, who arrived in Pennsylvania for the 2010 breeding season with two crops of racing age, and hit it big with 2012 and 2013 Horse of the Year Wise Dan, died of a heart attack at age 16 after covering a mare at Dana Point Farm in Lenhartsville, Pa. The son of Hennessy had bred five of the 38 mares booked to him that season.
Preakness history has had its share of manic trips, traps and troubles. Nine were given a closer look, including Codex and Genuine Risk in 1980, the winning run by temperamental 1926 winner Display, and the stretch battle between Greek Money and Ridan in 1962. A 10th account received special coverage with its own article -- that of Afleet Alex's stretch run in 2005.
