No longer a Thoroughbred farm, the multi-purpose facility is now The Meadow Event Park, and home to the State Fair of Virginia and other events. A portion has been preserved --The Meadow Historic District -- which includes the foaling shed where Secretariat was born, and the yearling and training barns where he was stabled, as well as Meadow Stud's stallion barn. A small horse cemetery has markers that indicate the final resting places of Hall of Famers Hill Prince and Sun Beau, and one of the farm's greatest broodmares, Imperatrice.
The life of Bill Pape and Jonathan Sheppard's homebred 2013 Eclipse Award winner and multiple Pennsylvania-bred champion Divine Fortune was remembered after the 12-year-old chestnut gelding was euthanized due to injuries in a fall while battling for the lead at the last fence of the New York Turf Writers Cup-G1 at Saratoga. He rose to his feet and walked onto the ambulance, but was diagnosed with a broken shoulder. Joe Clancy wrote in his editorial that Divine Fortune "used a daring, front-running style. He jumped long and bold, with flair. . ." In his final race he "turned for home with energy, briefly kicked away for a few strides. The fence came up wrong in terms of a takeoff spot and he gave it a go. . ."
The first ever Maryland Pride Day at Laurel Park featured tight races, the most popular horse in the Mid-Atlantic returning to form and a legendary trainer being honored.
A ceremony in the winner's circle celebrated trainer King T. Leatherbury's induction into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. He then sent out 9-year-old homebred Ben's Cat to win the Mister Diz Stakes for the sixth time. Other highlights: Hillwood Stable's Phlash Phelps winning the Find; Dark Hollow Farm homebred mare Joy edging defending All Brandy winner Vielsalm by a head; and Chip Reed's Monster Sleeping breaking through for to win the Jameela in her third try.
