 Looking Back

This month in mid-atlantic thoroughbred history! For Looking Back archives click here.

Named after owner Matt Dorman's father, Sonny Inspired picked up the first stakes win of his 27-start career in Laurel Park's Fire Plug. A $20,000 purchase at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic fall yearling sale from the Thornmar Farm consignment, the Maryland-bred colt was "tall and lanky and had a pretty strong personality," said Dorman. Dorman felt a personal connection to the son of Artie Schiller, as his father Arthur Dorman -- Artie for short -- introduced his son to racing years earlier at Bowie Race Track. The elder Dorman, who passed away in 2012, was nicknamed "Sonny."

Trained by Phil Schoenthal, Sonny Inspired earned $643,045 in 65 starts, counting 11 wins, four in stakes.

Page McKenney became a millionaire ($1,021,978) with a win in the Native Dancer Stakes Jan. 2. Trained by Mary Eppler, the 6-year-old Pennsylvania-bred gelding owned by Adam Staple and Jalin Stable won for the 15th time and seventh in Maryland. Bred by Dr. James E. Bryant and Linda P. Davis, he lost the first dozen races of his career until winning for a $16,000 tag at Colonial Downs in 2013.
