It had been 50 years since Native Dancer's son Kauai King became the only Maryland-bred to officially win the Kentucky Derby, and then added the Preakness Stakes. Joe Clancy caught up with Will O'Keefe, whose parents Frank and Lillian "Billie" O'Keefe foaled the colt at Sagamore Farm and raised him at their Pine Brook Farm near Warrenton, Va., before selling him as a yearling at Saratoga for $42,000 to Mike Ford.
"We were very pleased for having sold him for what at that time was the most we'd ever sold a yearling for," said O'Keefe. "It doesn't sound like much, but in the 1960s it was."
n With the victory by California Chrome in the $10 million Dubai World Cup-G1, Not For Love ranked third on the nation's broodmare sires list, trailing only Sunday Silence, represented by nearly seven times as many runners, and Storm Cat (more than three times as many runners).
Hansel, winner of the Preakness Stakes 25 years earlier, enjoyed a regal retirement at Lazy Lane Farms in Virginia. At 28, the Virginia-bred was the oldest North American classic winner. Champion 3-year-old of 1991, he won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes and earned more than $2.9 million for Lazy Lane and trainer Frankie Brothers.
Hansel died about a year later, in June 2017, aged 29.
